Creative development
To begin creating my phrases I thought about the limitations
I wanted to set myself; I chose to not travel away from the chair, to use 8
counts per motif, to explore all potential angles whilst remaining seated. I then
began to choreograph and ended with 7 motifs which I labelled A-G. Most phrases
have sharp movement whilst I left some to be more minimal to create some contrast.
I also broke my rule of remaining seated for one motif, motif C where I use the
8 counts to stand and walk around the vicinity of the chair to again show a
dynamic change.
To structure the section, I had to work closely with the
music I had chosen to workshop ideas and find an order that was the most
effective. This was a challenge as I wanted to use repetition to be effective
but there is potential for it to become boring, so it was a process of trial
and error. Once I was settled with my structure, I began learning the phrase
which was more challenging the expected as the repetition creates confusion for
me when I don’t have my notes to use.
In using this choreographic tool, although there were challenges,
I have found it has helped me create an effective section for my piece that expresses
the aura of the character I am portraying and with inspiration from my
practitioner I was able to implement the pedestrian aspects of movement to
create realism and develop a way of working with my hair as an extension of my
body to create organic movement.
