Critical Reflection and Self -Assessment

At this stage in my creating, I have performed my first full length draft for my peers and received useful feedback, however in this blog I will be focusing on my internal feed back and how this will affect the next stage. I used a rough edit of the music which I will revisit so that the sounds and songs flow together with more coherency. My costume won’t change much if at all as it is relevant but not a key feature of my piece. I will be focusing on how I found the movement to feel and how I want to change it.

The beginning section felt slow, and it lacked a building of energy that would match the words being spoken, as it is a collection of speeches. I feel that I achieved my aim of relating to the words without solely dancing to them as being too literal wouldn’t have been the right approach for my choreography. I’ve revised the choreography and cut the second half completely, recreating it using larger movements including a variety of jumps to introduce a new level and a sense of explosion and breaking out. This creates a more featural impact of the end of the final speech where Oprah Winfrey announces that when change comes it’ll be when “no one has to say, ‘me too’” (Stylist Magazine, 2019) and I will come to a pause to allow this to sink in.

Transitions between sections felt awkward and unplanned and there was a lack of detail. This will be things such as mapping out directions so that any walking will be with more purpose so that it adds value rather than just filling music. In the matter of walking, I will also be taking some out as I didn’t realise how much I had added and it is not necessary in some places, for instance in the transition between section two and three I have added a repeating motif that is descriptive of the uncomfortable feeling that comes with being grabbed or groped. I have decided to do this because based on my peer review, I don’t think I am being obvious enough in my approach and I do want my piece to be expressive, narrative and to hold significance.

Expressing the true message of my stimulus links with my need to refine details in the work; and the third section is where I wanted to show a dark narrative of what could happen to any woman when walking alone. The aim was to link with my research of the case of Sarah Everand from my first research blog. On reflection I could be more narrative in my approach as this part needs to be real and show the true darkness of cases like hers. Going back to the section I will delve further into research and try and find some media that I can use that will captivate this atmosphere.
